Fire

An article on www.drudgereport.com entitled Jews urged to light one less candle for Hanukkah to help environment... sparked some creative thoughts in my mind today. I didn't bother to read the article, for that would take away from judging a book by it's cover, but I agree that lighting one less candle by all the Jews in the world would definitely decrease global warming. Candles create fire. Fire is hot. Heat makes the globe warm. It's my opinion that everything the liberals do is because of global warming. Global warming is their god, so they must serve it. Simple as that. Liberals want to ban smoking everywhere. Not because of the huge health risk and medical costs, but because of the heat that cigarettes put off… not to mention the lighters, which create fire. Thousands of years ago, intelligent man created fire. Now liberals want to do away with it. Join me as I take a stance against these fire haters. Become Pro-Fire.

Extreme Home Makeover

We started our first home-makeover project this past weekend. We started to paint our guest bedroom. Kathy (Scott's mom) is coming down for Christmas so we had an incentive and a deadline. Thank goodness for long holiday weekends. We just have to finish the baseboards and the doors in the evenings this week. We should be done by the weekend. Stay tuned to find out if we finish in time. . .

Winters in Houston

Being from Pennsylvania and knowing what it actually means to be cold, I find Houston winters quite comical. First of all, when the temperatures drop to the low 40's, the local news channels make that there number one story. There could be terrorist attacks and global warming threats around the world, but those stories don't stand up against the temperature being in the low 40's. When the temperatures reach the low 30's or it snows ever so slightly, Houston is declared a disaster area, schools are shut down, and the news channels suggest that no one should leave their home, hoping that the government will fly in the national guard to rescue us and make their news stories better.

When I was walking through Walmart on a cold Saturday morning, I realized something else that makes Houston winters unique. People, especially the ladies, are wearing these at least $200.00 winter coats. Seriously, why do they spend that much money on a winter coat? They will only wear it about 5 times during the winter months. I still have my coat from college, and I refuse to buy a new one. Oh, and what's even more hilarious is the girls who wear those Eskimo boots. What's up with that? There's no snow. There's no mud either. Houston is all cement. Plus they wear them with skirts, which also makes no rational sense. I figure that winter here just gives ladies the opportunity to change their wardrobe.

How I miss Pennsylvania. Where the people understand winter. Where school doesn't get canceled unless the buses don't start because the temperature is 10 below zero. Where the ladies wear their bright orange hunting coats to school because that is the warmest coat they have. Where true beauty is the soft white snow covering the ground, not the expensive clothes that are bought for the winter months.

What is up with 'pants' and 'shorts'

What is up with the words pants and shorts?

First of all, is pants plural or singular? You might say, "give me my pants to put on." You're not talking about more than one pants. Just one. Because if you said, "give me my pant to put on," you would sound foolish. This goes the same for shorts.

But wait, there's more. Then you might say, "I'm going to the store to buy 'a pair' of pants." What? I doubt you are going to go and buy two identical 'pairs of pants'. That's not what you mean, but that's what you said. It's weird. I can understand saying, "a pair of gloves or a pair of sox." But a pair of pants?? Why do we want to make more out of one thing? First we make the word plural, then we double it (pair).

So we have concluded that pants, not pant, is the singular noun. Or did we??? How do you refer to the legs of your pants? That's right… pant legs. What's that?… 'pant.' So 'pant' is a word. So therefore, in this case, pant must be the singular form. Well, I ask you (not actually expecting a response, because you guys never respond to what I write), is pant or pants the singular form of this noun?

I have just proved why we should speak Spanish instead of English.

New Addition to the Family

Well, Scott and I have entered the next phase of married life.

Phase One: Get Married

Phase Two: Buy a House

Phase Three: Get a Pet

Phase Four: Have kids

We have entered Phase Three of married life. Phase 3, not to be confused with what phase everyone else wants us to be at. We now have a puppy running around the house. A lady at our church gave us a 4 week old puppy this past sunday after church. We are just now writing this blog because it took us four days to figure out its name and take some pictures of it. We finally decided on the name Sadie. She is part boxer and part "Wright Road Gigilo". In other words half stray dog. She is very playful and sweet.
Now, I would like to go ahead and say that just because we entered phase 3 of marriage doesn't mean we will be entering the next phase anytime soon. Besides we have to do the "pet test" first to see if we can actually handle the extra responsibility. And you can't just put a kid in a kennel or throw them in the backyard when you are tired of playing with them.
You can check out more pictures of Sadie on the Flickr link.

The Band

Probably one of the most enjoyable times of our week is our youth worship band practice. Back in February, Ginger and I found some hidden talents in our youth group. We found that we have some excellent musicians. We had a drummer, a couple guitarists and some great singers. Our first few months were rocky, as the students tried to learn the songs and work together. Practices would take a couple hours for only 3 songs. As time went on, they began working together better, and now they sound awesome. Around April, a family joined our church who had an eighth grader, who plays drums like a professional and a Sophomore who is great at the guitar, but mostly plays bass for us. Adding their talent to the mix was like the icing on the cake that the band needed.

But for me, there is more than just seeing and hearing these students worship the Lord through instruments and singing, getting to know them has been the real blessing. We have some students that humble me with their knowledge of God and relationship with Him. It's awesome to hear students talk about what God is doing in their lives, rather than surface stuff like movies and sports. So anyway, I just wanted to share this... and if any band members read this, You Rock!

I think...

I think... life would be better if adults got summer breaks. ... that every house should be governmantally mandated to have a swimming pool and they paid for it. ...that instead of paying taxes to the government, everybody should pay a portion of there pay check to me. ...that weekends should be 3 days. ...that Sponge Bob Square Pants and The Simpsons should be the only shows allowed on TV. ...that people should be allowed to disobey the law of gravity and fly. ...that people should have more faith, so there would be more miracles and healings. ...that toilet paper should only have one use and one brand. --Scott

teenagers!

Did we mention that we love teenagers! Yes, well if you didn't already know we do. We work with them at church and occasionally hang out with them on the weekends. Well this weekend, four weeks after moving into our new home, they returned the LOVE. That's right, LOVE! Nothing says love more than teenagers spending every dime they own to buy toilet paper just to throw it in your really nice, tall trees at 3 in the morning.

Ahh, love! Now daily we come home and still see the reminisce of their love. Yep, it's now been three days and there is still an abundance of white strands dancing in the wind, high above the ground in the branches of our beautiful trees.
