What is up with 'pants' and 'shorts'

What is up with the words pants and shorts?

First of all, is pants plural or singular? You might say, "give me my pants to put on." You're not talking about more than one pants. Just one. Because if you said, "give me my pant to put on," you would sound foolish. This goes the same for shorts.

But wait, there's more. Then you might say, "I'm going to the store to buy 'a pair' of pants." What? I doubt you are going to go and buy two identical 'pairs of pants'. That's not what you mean, but that's what you said. It's weird. I can understand saying, "a pair of gloves or a pair of sox." But a pair of pants?? Why do we want to make more out of one thing? First we make the word plural, then we double it (pair).

So we have concluded that pants, not pant, is the singular noun. Or did we??? How do you refer to the legs of your pants? That's right… pant legs. What's that?… 'pant.' So 'pant' is a word. So therefore, in this case, pant must be the singular form. Well, I ask you (not actually expecting a response, because you guys never respond to what I write), is pant or pants the singular form of this noun?

I have just proved why we should speak Spanish instead of English.

This post cracked me up. I agree with you, but I am going to continue to speak grammatically incorrect because I'm to lazy to try to change.
I hope you all are doing well and your puppy is adorable.

Dear Scott,

Hi. It's Jill Reese - a blast from your past at CHS. I was doing an internet search to find some classmates I didn't know how to contact, and stumbled upon your blog.

I am trying to pull together a contact list to make planning our next reunion easier, so if you could email me your info I'd really appreciate it (jill[dot]p[dot]reese[at]gmail[dot]com). Also, please pass along the request to anyone from our class that you keep up with.

It's good to see that you're doing well.

Take care,

Jill
